The Philippine Embalmers and Undertakers Review and Training Center (PEURTC) continued training aspiring morticians in the Philippines via online platforms.

The PEURTC, one of six DOH-accredited embalming schools and the only institution in Makati is a four-month training school that teaches applicants anatomy, physiology, ethics and jurisprudence, good manners, and conduct.

Online training at the institution started in 2001 but only gained further traction during the pandemic.

PEURTC administrator Lumen Tapia said the online setup is advantageous in teaching theoretical concepts of mortuary and the funeral industry.

"Accommodate kami 50 tao, ngayon sa bahay lang, less na sa akin ang abala. Bahala na ang trainer of the day," said Tapia.

(We accommodate 50 people, now just at home, it lessens my burden. It is up to the trainer of the day to deal with it).

Trainers would have their facilities and designated areas via Zoom classrooms.

Tapia also said that the institution benefits from not having to pay rent space compared to what they faced before resorting to online learning.

She then added that PEURTC conducts its online classes for three months in all of its training institutions. Their online class consists of 30 half-day sessions of around four hours.

The only actual exposure students would have are lectures and practicals.

Practicals last only one to two months compared to three months of virtual theoretical classes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with examinations held in March and September.

Practicals would be held at the Sanctuarium at Araneta Avenue, Quezon City.

"Theoretical ka muna then practical. Kung hindi ka pumasa, uulitin mo [the course] for the license," said Federico Caupe, a PEURTC graduate and embalmer at the Loyola Memorial and Chapel in Commonwealth Quezon City.

(You study theoretical topics first before undergoing practicals. If you do not pass, you will redo [the course] for the license).

Examinees will be issued with a certificate of registration and ID as licensed embalmers once they pass the online theoretical and physical practical exams.
